The year 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of outstanding electrical achievement for Harper Wood Electric Co. Having begun operations as an electrical contractor in commercial and industrial construction, Harper Wood Electric Co. has gained, perhaps the most recognition in the convention and trade show electrical industry with over 45 years of experience.

Mr. Harper N. Wood and Mr. Aubrey Chapman formed and incorporated Associated Operations, Inc. dba Harper Wood Electric Co. on January 11, 1956.  Our first endeavor into 'Show' business began with the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition (as it was called in those days) in the Sam Houston Coliseum.  From there, we began doing small car shows and boat shows in the Sam Houston Coliseum, and went on to be the major electrical provider at the Albert Thomas Convention Center.  We were pioneers of the trade show and convention industry in Houston and have grown with the industry from its beginning into the present.

Harper Wood Electric Co. has been the exclusive electrical contractor for the Reliant Park (Astrodome/Astrohall Complex) since its opening in 1966, almost 38 years!  It is there that we have proudly serviced such prestigious accounts as the Offshore Technology Conference, the National Association of Homebuilders, Instrument Society of America, and the 1992 Republican National Convention, as well as thousands of publics shows, both large and small.  We have also been the official electrical contractor for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for its duration at the Reliant Park (Astrodome/Astrohall complex).

When the Dallas Convention Center opened in the early 1970's, many of the conventions which had become associated with Harper Wood Electric Co. in Houston, requested our services in Dallas.  To meet this demand, we opened our Dallas office in 1974.  We were the primary eletrical contractor at the Dallas Convention Center from 1974 to 1983, at which time we were given an exclusive contract through 1989.  During our tenure, we had the privilege of providing electrical services for the National Home Center/Home Improvement Congress, the National Association of Broadcasters, Food Market Institute, the National Association of Homebuilders, and the 1984 Republican National Convention.  Each of these shows utilized Levels II and III for exhibit space and are among the largest shows ever held at the Dallas Convention Center.  Since 1984, we have also been the exclusive electrical contractor for the Dallas Market Center which includes the Dallas Market Hall, The World Trade Center, The Apparel Mart, and the Infomart.

Working with Hemisphere Management, we helped to develop the electrical services that are now supplied to the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio.  In the late 1970's, we began providing electrical to the then named San Antonio Convention Center.  In 1981, Harper Wood Electric Co. opened full services offices in San Antonio.  Prior to the opening of the Alamodome in San Antonio, we were again requested to provide input to the planning of the electrical services.  We have had the privilege of providing services at these venues for many keystone events.  A partial list includes the President's Drug Summit, The League of Cities Showcase, The Olympic Festival, NBA All Stars, The NCAA Final Four Basketball Championships, as well as the largest trade shows and conventions held in San Antonio.

Harper Wood Electric Co. was asked by the City of Houston to provide input on the planning of the electrical services at the George R. Brown Convention Center.  We were the exclusive electrical/plumbing contractor at the George R. Brown from its opening in 1987 through May 1995.  During our term at the George R. Brown Convention Center, we were honored to have the opportunity to provide electrical and plumbing services for such notable accounts as the Texas Restaurant Association, the World Economic Summit, the American Welding Society, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

In Houston, we have a full service commercial electrical department.  Our scope in the department ranges from new construction of projects in excess of two million dollars, plus a 24 hour service department and estimating staff.  We service many businesses, hospitals, banks, restaurants, and the local CBS affiliate KHOU channel 11.  This can be a plus for the convention industry, as we have on hand the equipment, to handle any emergency situation that may arise and can remedy most problems with minimal time loss.
